Rei Kawakubo

Rei Kawakubo (born October 11, 1942) is an avant-garde Japanese fashion designer whose work is distinguished by its warped asymmetry, distressed fabrics, and monochromatic palette. Since her rise to prominence in the early 1980s, she has become influential for her work under the label Comme des Garçons (trans. "like some boys"), of which she is a part-time owner. The label has thirteen boutiques and approximately 200 vendors around the world. Each year, the company grosses in the neighborhood of $150 million. Kawakubo donates extensively to orphan relief and Major League Baseball in the United States. She is married to Adrian Joffe who is also chief executive officer of Comme des Garçons.

Rei and Comme des Garçons is also the owner of the eclectic, cutting-edge mini-department store Dover Street Market in Mayfair, London
